Going Beyond Our Reach

There are moments in life when we hit a wall. We've said everything we know to say, done everything we know to do, and still nothing seems to change. What do we do when we reach the end of our reach? The answer isn't to try harder. The answer is to pray in the Holy Ghost.

What Does It Mean to "Go Beyond Our Reach"?

The Roman soldier carried a spear as part of his weaponry. The reason it was so effective was simple: it goes places the soldier cannot go. It extends beyond his natural reach.

That image is a powerful picture of what praying in the Holy Ghost does for every believer. There are situations we cannot fix, people we cannot reach, places we cannot go, and battles we cannot even see. But God has not left us without help.

Jude 20 says it plainly:

"But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit."

Notice Jude doesn't just say "pray." He says pray in the Holy Ghost. That distinction matters more than we often realize.

There are times when we genuinely do not know how to pray for a situation. We don't have enough information. We don't know what's happening in someone's heart. We can't see what's going on behind the scenes.

Romans 8:26 speaks directly to this:

"Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."

The word "helps" in this verse carries the idea of taking hold together with someone else so that something can be moved forward. Like two people moving a heavy piano that one person could never move alone, the Holy Spirit comes alongside us and pushes that prayer further than we ever could on our own.

It Takes Us Beyond Our Ability

Every one of us has limitations. One of the hardest realities in life is watching someone we love walk away from God and realizing we cannot make them come back. We cannot change a person's heart. We cannot make someone surrender to the Lord.

When we've prayed everything we know how to pray and done everything we've been shown to do, the Holy Spirit takes us beyond those limitations. He knows what's happening in that person's heart even when we don't. When our reach ends, His reach is just beginning.

It Takes Us Beyond Our Location

We can only be in one place at a time. A mother cannot walk beside her son in boot camp every day. A parent cannot follow their child into every room or every decision. But the Holy Spirit is not confined to geography.

When we pray in the Holy Ghost, we are sending that spear into locations where our feet cannot go. God can move where we cannot. Our presence has limitations. His presence does not.

It Takes Us Beyond Our Understanding

There are battles happening in the Spirit realm that our natural eyes cannot see. Sometimes we think the problem is a person or a circumstance, but there may be a spiritual battle underneath that we are completely unaware of.

The Spirit knows what we don't know. We don't have to understand every battle to pray. We don't have to see everything to intercede. We simply yield to the One who does see everything.

It Takes Us Beyond Our Circumstances

Circumstances can get very loud. A doctor's report, a phone call with bad news, a prodigal's choices playing out in front of you. If we are not careful, what we see can become bigger than what we believe.

Faith does not deny circumstances. Faith refuses to believe those circumstances are greater than God.

Think of a farmer who plants a seed and covers it with dirt. From the outside, nothing appears to be happening. But that doesn't mean nothing is happening beneath the surface. Just because we cannot see the work does not mean God isn't working. We may see the bondage. God sees the deliverance. We may see the prodigal in a far country. God sees the road home.

What Do You Do When You've Been Waiting a Long Time?

This may be the hardest one of all. You've prayed and prayed. Nothing seems to be changing. The enemy whispers that nothing is happening and that you've prayed long enough.

Proverbs 21:5 offers a steady word:

"The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty."

Steady, faithful, persistent. Sometimes faith looks like a giant leap. But sometimes faith looks like showing up again tomorrow, and then the next day, and then the next year.

Praying in the Holy Ghost during the waiting season does something important. It builds us up. It strengthens us. It keeps faith alive when the answer hasn't come yet. Jude 20 says we build ourselves up on our most holy faith by praying in the Holy Ghost. That building up happens in the waiting.

Don't put down your spear while you're waiting. The greatest testimony isn't always that God answered quickly. Sometimes it's that you kept believing until He did.

It might be beyond your reach, but it is never beyond the reach of the Holy Ghost. When our ability ends, He is still able. When our understanding ends, He knows. When our location limits us, He can go where we cannot. When circumstances overwhelm us, He is still God. When waiting seems unbearable, He builds us up in the process.

So when you come to the end of your reach, don't quit. Pick up your spear. Pray in the Holy Ghost. Because that spear goes places where you cannot go.

This week, identify one situation in your life where you have reached the end of your natural reach. Maybe it's a relationship that feels broken beyond repair. Maybe it's a child or a loved one you've been praying for without seeing any change. Maybe it's a circumstance that feels impossible.

Instead of trying harder in your own strength, commit to praying in the Holy Ghost over that specific situation every day this week. Let the Spirit take hold of it with you. Trust that He is working beneath the surface even when you cannot see it. Don't put down your spear.
