Who is really sitting on the throne of your heart?
Every decision you make is shaped by what you value most. Your schedule, your spending, your conversations, and even your thought life all point to one thing: what truly holds first place in your life. And that reveals who is really sitting on the throne of your heart.
Whether it is fishing, sports, building a home, or scrolling through your phone, whatever you give your time, money, and attention to tells the real story of your priorities. Jesus made this plain in Matthew 6:21:
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Whatever consumes your thoughts will control your life. What captures your attention will capture your affection. The battle always begins in the mind before it shows up in your actions.
Consider this: a boss tells an employee to paint a house on Woodward Lane. The employee works hard, does a beautiful job, and gives it everything he has. But he painted the wrong house. He was on Woodward Drive.
The tragedy was not his lack of effort. The tragedy was misdirected effort. You can be sincere, hardworking, and well-intentioned and still be climbing the wrong wall. Good intentions are not enough if your priorities are pointed in the wrong direction.
The First Commandment is clear: "You shall have no other gods before Me." (Exodus 20:3) God does not compete for your affection. He has already done everything possible to win your heart. He simply demands the throne.
Jesus does not become an addition to your schedule when you enter the Kingdom of God. He becomes your schedule. He is not just a part of your life. He becomes your life. As the Bible reminds us, you were bought at a price. You do not belong to yourself.
"You were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your Spirit, which are God's." - 1 Corinthians 6:20
God's kingdom is always expanding. His rule is never stagnant. This includes His rule within each of us. It does not stop when you get filled with the Holy Spirit. It does not stop at a certain age. His influence in you should keep growing, and as it does, it will spill over into the lives of people around you.
His peace deepens. His holiness increases. His character becomes more visible, especially in your home where it matters most.
For Jesus to increase in your life, your own kingdom must decrease. This is the daily battle every believer faces. In God's Kingdom, He makes the rules. He sets the standard. Self dies. Pride bows. The flesh surrenders. And Jesus increases.
This week, take an honest look at what is sitting on the throne of your heart. It might be a habit, a distraction, a relationship, or even a mindset that has quietly taken first place. Identify one specific thing that has been competing with God for that throne, and surrender it to Him. Delete it, step back from it, or bring it before God in prayer and say, "Lord, I give this to You. You are King."
Ask yourself these questions as you go through your week:
- When I wake up in the morning, what is the first thing my mind goes to?
- If someone looked at my calendar and my bank account, what would they say my priorities are?
- Am I treating obedience to God as optional, or am I surrendering my choices to the King?
- Is Jesus truly reigning in my life, or am I still trying to run my own kingdom?
Joshua said it plainly: "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve." (Joshua 24:15 NKJV). Today is your day to choose. Remove whatever rival has taken the throne and declare once again: King Jesus, reign over every part of my life.
