Transformation

One of my favorite aspects of spring is seeing new life emerge after the cold, dark season of winter. Leaves and blossoms form on trees, grass blankets the ground with a fresh green carpet, and flowers burst into yellow, pink, and purple blooms. The memories of bitter cold and gloomy, grey skies are forgotten as the warmth of the new season melts away the snow and ice. Despite having witnessed the transformation of spring many times, I’m still filled with excitement each year as this season approaches.

Perhaps that’s because every spring, I am reminded of the inner transformation that Jesus brings to our lives. It is no coincidence that Christians celebrate Easter Sunday and the resurrection of our Savior during this season of renewed life bursting forth. After all, this is why Jesus came to Earth and died and rose from the grave, so that we too could experience new life!

Without Him, our own hearts are hardened by sin, as cold and frozen as an ice storm in January. Our future is bleak and gray, with no hope of permanent change coming from our own strength or willpower. The power of sin, the chains of addition, the destructive behaviors that we repeat over and over are too strong for us to break on our own.

But winter is not intended to be permanent. The moment we are willing to surrender our lives to Jesus and give Him everything that is dead and broken in our lives, He comes to destroy the power of sin and bring us into a fresh new season! Jesus is the Life Giver, the Life Restorer. He transforms our hard hearts and makes us truly come alive.

The apostle Paul, once a relentless persecutor of all who followed Jesus of Nazareth, personally experienced this transformation when he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. This man who tirelessly pursued and imprisoned the saints was converted and became the most unlikely apostle. In a letter to the Corinthian church, Paul writes, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (II Cor 5:17 NLT). Paul no longer identified with who he was before Christ. That person was gone forever. He only recognized that he was entirely different, with a new purpose and calling.

You too can experience that transformation, when you put your trust in Jesus Christ and receive His forgiveness for your sins. He is willing to give you that brand new life, right now, and the promise of eternal life. He is ready to tell you, “Behold, I make all things new.”

Are you ready for that new life to begin?
